Font Formats Explained
I was Googling around and my attempt to satiate my curiosity led me to this explanation of the different formats of fonts you can purchase / download onto your computer and what the differences are between them. As you might know if you've ever purchased a font before, you probably know that there are a couple of different formats to choose from: TrueType, PostScript and Open Type. Depending on what you plan on using it for or how you plan to use it, it is important to get the right format. This article explains it all.

Has anyone heard of this before?
I met a lady the other day that is doing her own marketing for her business/starting of her business. We started talking and we talked about the price of Adobe products and such, and she informed me that she uses Gimp. She loves it. I haven't done much research with it, but is supposedly does everything Adobe does for a free download. It does web and print.

If you haven't already heard
As many already know, ABC's Extreme home makeover was recently in the area. I really like this show because it provides good family's who give more to others over themselves with something good. I also like this show for Ty, but in addition, it provides a new sense of design. Although this may not be graphic design, it is still design and many of these ideas can be transferred to paper. The design team is always coming up with awesome textures, color schemes, and new fresh ideas.
If you haven't watched the show, (it may not be for you they usually are tearjerkers) you could always check out the last 35 minutes and see what inspiration you may find.

Web Design: woopid
I was searching the web for a tutorial on how to change my default RSS reader on my Mac (it's not incredibly obvious) when a link I clicked on led me to a surprisingly elegant website: Woopid.com. What immediately caught my eye was it's use of bright colors and (ahem) gradients to create illusions of light and 3D forms in a way that guides your eye around the important information in the order they want you to see it in. It's really neat, and they have a good tutorial on changing your default RSS reader as well.

Wordpress 404 Errors
WPBeginner.com has compiled a collection of interesting 404 error pages for Wordpress. Some of them are pretty creative and are good for a giggle or two. Have a look!

Site for Music
I am not sure how many of you are familiar with Pandora Radio, but it is awesome. If you go to www.pandora.com, you can specify an artist, song, or genre and it will produce HOURS of music for you for FREE!!! It has saved me many times while in the lab. Occasionally, there will be a 30 second commercial, but otherwise it is straight music.

Site for images
At my internship, we did a quick search for a place to find images other than istock, due to istock prices. We found the site http://www.dreamstime.com/free-photos. The images aren't that bad. There are not as many as Istock, and not as good, but for a quick filler or some searching, some images are pretty good. Also, it allows you to upload pictures and either get paid or get credits if they choose your image.
Letters on your computer aren't what they look like
Typophile.com has an interesting article on antialiasing and how it pertains to tiny type. You might be surprised what goes in to making tiny letters readable in different environments. It can get pretty complicated, and often must be done by hand (well, by mouse, but you get the idea). It gives me that much more appreciation for people who make computer graphics for a living.

Legibility and age
Legibility is of course one of the main goals when creating signage, but how an elderly person may see your beautiful sign is quite different that it may appear to you.

Tony Tony Tony
As you guys also know, much of my last few weeks have revolved around Tony Fitzpatrick. So, I thought I would let everyone in on some of the fun. Here is the link to his website. http://www.tonyfitzpatrick.com/
Ways to keep informed
As you all know, I am not much for social networking. This blog is even a struggle for me. However, one site I do like is delicious at http://delicious.com/. This is a bookmarking site that allows not only yourself, but others to send you links to sites they fell you would be interested in. I have used this site for several things. It is especially great for keeping track of all internet based sources for papers.
Friedhatrd Kiekeben
I love Friedhard Kiekeben's work. This is more art for art's sake than graphic design, but it is a digitally created image printed for public display.

Andrei D. Robu
I know not everyone likes to learn by example, but I have been trying to look at other designers' work and analyze it. I just found this site and I think some of his concepts are interesting, like the more calligraphic stuff, but overall I'm not sure what I think of him. I also found it interesting that he formatted his site the way he did.
What do you think?
